What Time Is It in Russia Right Now?

Russia Time Zone Quick Reference

One clock for the whole network. Until August 2018 the long-distance railway ignored local zones: timetables, tickets, departure boards, station clocks and announcements were all given in Moscow time wherever the station stood, so a train leaving Vladivostok was announced seven hours from the clock on a passenger's wrist. The rule came from the Soviet period and was meant to spare travellers resetting a watch across a continent; in practice it left the unfamiliar reading a departure on the wrong day. Since that August each station uses local time, with the Moscow figure alongside. Suburban services had always run on local time, which is part of why the old rule confused people at the same platform.

Where the Eleven UTC Offsets Fall

Why so many. The territory crosses a longitudinal span no other country approaches, and the zones follow administrative boundaries rather than meridians, so one offset can cover a very wide band - Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk sit in the same one. Kaliningrad is the western outlier: an exclave separated from the rest of the country, and the only Russian region on UTC+2.

Fixed, not abolished. Russia once moved its clocks twice a year like its western neighbours. A period of permanent summer time was then tried and abandoned, and since that experiment ended every zone has held a fixed standard offset. Nothing in the current arrangement produces a switch, and the EU rules governing the March and October dates across several borders have no application here - so every gap between Russia and a country that does change moves twice a year, entirely on the other side.

Read against Moscow. Minsk, Dubai and Beijing never vary, each holding a fixed offset exactly as Moscow does. The remaining four narrow by an hour in summer for one reason only: those cities move their clocks forward while this one stays put. For any other Russian zone, add its own difference from Moscow to every figure.

Business Hours From Kaliningrad to Kamchatka

Two ends of a working day. The overlap between the far west and far east is narrow enough that no single live meeting reaches everyone, which is why an organisation coordinating nationally sets its reference in Moscow time and each region works out its own. Aviation has always used local time at each airport and rail now does the same at each station, so the two no longer disagree. Anything booked across zones is worth checking against the specific city rather than the country, since eleven answers are possible. Always confirm schedules directly with the operator.
