Azerbaijan Time Zone and Local Time: a Single Clock for a Divided Country

Steady all year. Azerbaijan runs on UTC+4 in every month as Azerbaijan Time (AZT), with no daylight saving since 2016. Local time is UTC plus four hours. Against any other zone the gap is four less that zone's own offset, with a negative offset widening it rather than closing it: UTC+2 sits two hours behind, UTC-4 eight.

  • Time zone: UTC+4 (AZT)

  • Daylight saving: Ended in 2016

  • IANA identifier: Asia/Baku

  • Zones nationwide: One, covering both parts of the country

  • Land neighbours: Five countries

Border Time Differences and the Exclave That Touches Everything

Split land, single clock. Azerbaijan is not one continuous block. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic lies apart from the rest of the country with Armenian territory in between, yet both pieces run on the same UTC+4, and nothing on a watch marks the gap.

Every regional clock at one edge. Nakhchivan's frontiers reach Armenia at UTC+4, Iran at UTC+3:30 and Türkiye at UTC+3, so the smallest piece of the country is the only one that meets all three offsets around it, and the only one touching Türkiye at all. The mainland meets a narrower set, with Russia the one neighbour the exclave never reaches.

Daylight Saving Time and the Last Caucasus Repeal

Last to stop. Azerbaijan kept moving its clocks after both its Caucasus neighbours had given up, Georgia first and Armenia next, and ended its own transitions in 2016. That decision left the three countries on one shared, unmoving offset and closed the seasonal gaps that used to open between their capitals for part of each year.

What it means now. No transition is stored for Asia/Baku and none is pending, so any difference measured against Azerbaijan moves only when the other party moves. A gap worked out in December is still correct in June.

Time Differences Across the Caspian

The sea divides more. Baku faces east across water toward ports an hour ahead: Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan and Aktau in Kazakhstan, the latter on UTC+5 since Kazakhstan merged its two zones into one. Counting Iran on the southern shore at UTC+3:30, the states ringing this single enclosed sea span an hour and a half of clock time, which is more than any of Azerbaijan's land frontiers can manage.

Local Time in Baku Against Major World Hubs

Pin it to midday. Baku reaches noon at 08:00 UTC. Midday on a UTC+1 clock therefore falls at three in the afternoon here, and midday on UTC-5 at nine at night.

Business Hours and the Shape of the Daylight Year

Weekday rhythm. Companies keep a Monday-to-Friday week running roughly nine to six, banks half past nine to half past five, with Saturday and Sunday free. The pattern matches Europe and North America, so no weekday needs translating.

Long summer evenings. Daylight runs from roughly nine and a quarter hours in late December to just over fifteen in June. Midsummer keeps the sun up past eight at night, while in early January it fails to clear the horizon until shortly after eight in the morning.

Common Confusions About Local Time in Azerbaijan

Do I change my watch travelling between Baku and Nakhchivan?
No. Both parts of the country keep the same offset, so a journey that leaves and re-enters national territory changes nothing on the clock.

Why do some systems display +04 rather than AZT?
The database stores the numeric offset and treats the letter code as a display convention, so software often prints the number. Both refer to the same reading.

When does the date change in Azerbaijan?
At 20:00 UTC. From that point the local date runs ahead of a European evening that is still in the previous day.

How late does it get dark in Baku in summer?
Late. Around the June solstice the sun sets after eight in the evening, giving a long usable evening despite the clock never moving.

Which countries read the same clock as Azerbaijan?
Both Caucasus neighbours, and further south the Emirates and Oman. None of the four switches seasonally, so those readings never drift apart.

Did Azerbaijan ever use a different offset?
Yes. Until the repeal the country rose to UTC+5 for the summer months, so records from before it may sit an hour further ahead than expected.
