The Last South American Country to End Clock Changes
Paraguay held out longest. Neighbours dropped seasonal clocks one after another until only Chile and Paraguay were still switching, and then only Chile. The change came by legislation rather than decree, which matters: a statute takes another statute to undo. The country kept the later of its two settings, so the summer offset became permanent and the winter one disappeared.
Why Old Data Still Gets Paraguay Wrong
Two offsets in the same records. Systems that have not refreshed their time zone data still expect UTC−4 for part of the year, putting anything scheduled against Asunción an hour out for months at a stretch. An unexpected hour in a booking points to a stale database before anything else.
Two Bridges, Three Countries, No Adjustment
The triple frontier now runs on one reading. Where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina meet at Ciudad del Este, Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú, all three sides hold UTC−3 without seasonal variation — so two international crossings in an afternoon cost nothing on the watch. That alignment is a consequence of Paraguay's decision, not a longstanding fact: while the switch existed, the junction split for part of every year. Departures at the frontier are quoted in whichever country's schedule you are reading. Always confirm schedules directly with the operator.
The Same Border Runs the Dams
Itaipú and Yacyretá are binational. Both plants are jointly operated with the neighbour on the far bank, and dispatch, metering and settlement run on wall-clock time. With Asunción, Brasília and Buenos Aires now sharing one reading, the operational day at each dam no longer splits twice a year.

Common Questions About Paraguayan Time
Is Paraguay a day behind Asia?
Through most of the local working day, yes — Seoul and Tokyo have already started the following date.
Did Paraguay stop changing clocks, or change zones?
Both, in effect: the seasonal switch ended and the summer offset stayed, so it is the winter hour that vanished.
Why does the gap with Santiago open and close?
Chile still switches; Paraguay does not, so every bit of the movement comes from the Chilean side.
Which land crossing costs an hour?
Only the Bolivian one. Every other border into Paraguay leads to a country on the same reading.
Is PYT ever written as PYST?
That label belonged to the summer offset while the switch existed. With one setting left, only PYT applies.
Which neighbour is furthest from Paraguay's clock?
Bolivia, at an hour behind — a gap that holds in every month, since neither country changes.
