What Time Is It in Portugal Right Now?

One neighbour, one step. Spain, the only land neighbour, runs on Central European Time, an hour ahead in both seasons because both sides switch on the same two Sundays. Longitude does not explain it: the sun reaches Lisbon and Madrid within about twenty minutes of each other, so the Spanish clock simply reads later at the same moment of daylight. Portugal did try closing the gap, moving the mainland onto the central European clock in 1992 and reversing it in 1996 after four dark winters and objections over school starts. No other European country has adopted CET and then abandoned it.

One calendar, two archipelagos. EU law sets the switch dates identically across the union, so no Portuguese ministry can move them and neither autonomous region can opt out. Ending seasonal changes stays a legal possibility rather than a plan: the route exists, each state would name its own permanent offset, and no year is set. Portugal would have to decide twice over, since settling the mainland leaves the Azores unanswered.

Business Hours Between the Mainland and the Islands

Mind the island hour. A Lisbon working day overlaps the Azores generously in the morning and thinly at the end, so the middle of the mainland afternoon suits both ends. Airlines and ferries print departures and arrivals in the local clock at each end, which makes a westbound flight look an hour shorter than it is and the return an hour longer. Inter-island services thin out outside the summer months, so a July connection may not run in January. Always confirm schedules directly with the operator.

What do hora legal and hora de verão mean?
Hora legal is the Portuguese term for the legally binding time in force, and hora de verão is summer time. Official notices, rail announcements and broadcast schedules use these rather than WET and WEST.

Is WET the same thing as GMT?
