South Sudan Time Zone: UTC+2 (CAT) After Moving Back an Hour in 2021
South Sudan uses Central Africa Time (CAT), UTC+2, with no daylight saving. The country inherited UTC+3 at independence and kept it for a decade, then moved back an hour in a single permanent step - one of very few offset changes anywhere in recent years, and a rare case of a country stepping backward rather than forward.

Two Countries That Separated, Then Diverged on the Clock
Sudan moved first, in 2017; South Sudan followed four years later. The two had shared one reading before independence and kept it afterwards - but Sudan shifted to UTC+2 in November 2017 while South Sudan stayed on UTC+3, putting an hour between the former halves of a single state. That gap closed on 1 February 2021, when Juba made the same move for the same stated reason.
Why the UTC Offset Changed: Longitude, Not Energy
The government cited the 30th meridian. Most offset changes are justified by electricity demand or by trade alignment; this one was argued on geography. South Sudan spans roughly the 24th to 36th meridians east, averaging near 30°E, which corresponds to UTC+2 rather than UTC+3. Under the old offset the clock ran more than an hour ahead of the sun in Juba, and six in the morning was still dark - the change brought the reading closer to solar time across the whole territory.
The Move Closed One Border and Opened Three
Sudan matched before; now the eastern neighbours do not. Closing the gap with Khartoum came at the cost of opening one with Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda, all of which hold UTC+3. To the west the Central African Republic sits on UTC+1, an hour behind, while the eastern DR Congo reads UTC+2 alongside Juba. That leaves South Sudan bordered by three different offsets at once - an unusual position for any country.
Landlocked, With Cargo Crossing an Offset Line
The route to the sea now changes the clock. Most freight moves through Mombasa in Kenya, which holds UTC+3, so a truck leaving Juba crosses into an hour ahead partway and the corridor supplying the country runs on two readings. Before 2021 it ran on one. The alternative routes north through Sudan stay on a single figure, which is a practical consequence of the change rather than a stated aim of it.
Daylight Saving Time in South Sudan: Never Applied
No seasonal variant has been used under either offset. Neither the EAT decade nor the current CAT period carried a summer rule, so the database records one permanent transition and nothing else. That also means the hour on the eastern border holds in every month rather than appearing and disappearing.
Time Difference With Major Cities
City | Difference from local time |
|---|---|
Same time, in every month | |
1 hour behind, both sides fixed | |
1 hour ahead, both sides fixed | |
2 hours ahead, unchanged | |
Zurich, Athens | Level or 1 hour behind, depending on the European season |
2 hours behind, narrowing to 1 during British Summer Time | |
3 hours ahead, unchanged | |
7 hours behind, narrowing to 6 in the northern summer |
Business Hours With Kampala, Nairobi and the Aid Sector
The regional day starts an hour before this one. Kenyan and Ugandan counterparts open while Juba is still an hour from its own start, so a meeting convenient in Nairobi lands early here - the reverse of the situation before 2021. Humanitarian and UN operations coordinating between the three capitals therefore carry a fixed hour of conversion that did not exist in the country's first decade. Europe is the easier direction, level or an hour behind depending on its season.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in South Sudan
When did South Sudan change its time zone?
On 1 February 2021, moving back an hour from UTC+3 to UTC+2.
Why did South Sudan change its offset?
The government argued the country sits near the 30th meridian, which corresponds to UTC+2, and that sunrise came too late under the old reading.
Is South Sudan the same time as Sudan?
Yes, since the change - both hold UTC+2 with no changeover.
Which borders move a watch?
Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda an hour ahead, and the Central African Republic an hour behind.
Why does old software show Juba an hour ahead?
Because it carries the pre-2021 offset. Updated data holds UTC+2.
Does any state keep a different hour from Juba?
No. Every state reads alike, from Wau to Malakal.
Which identifier should software store?
Africa/Juba, which records both offsets and the date between them.
