Current Time in Brazil: Four Offsets, One Clock Rule
Brazil runs on four offsets, from UTC−2 to UTC−5, and none of them shifts seasonally. The capital and most of the population sit on UTC−3; the live clock above shows the current reading for Brasília.
Local Time by Region: Which of the Four Offsets Applies
Where you are | Zone | Offset |
|---|---|---|
Fernando de Noronha | — | UTC−2 |
Brasília, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Recife | Brasília Time (BRT) | UTC−3 |
Manaus, Cuiabá, Campo Grande, Porto Velho, Boa Vista | Amazon Time (AMT) | UTC−4 |
Acre and western Amazonas | Acre Time (ACT) | UTC−5 |
An Island Hour Ahead of the Mainland
The clock runs forward when you leave the coast. Fernando de Noronha lies far enough into the Atlantic that its offset follows its longitude rather than the state governing it. Flying out from the Northeast means setting a watch forward, the opposite of every other domestic hop in the country, and the return leg gives the hour back. It is the only part of Brazil with a resident civilian population on UTC−2.
Does Brazil Still Change Its Clocks?
Not anywhere. Brazil ended daylight saving nationwide, and no state kept a schedule of its own. What makes a return complicated is how the old system worked: it never covered the whole country. The South, Southeast and Centre-West moved their clocks while the North and Northeast did not, so for months each year Brazil carried an internal boundary that existed only in summer. The rule was set and withdrawn by federal decree rather than by any regional body, so a reversal needs one signature — and reopens the question of which states are in.
The State That Voted Its Hour Back
Acre changed twice. Federal law moved Acre and part of western Amazonas from UTC−5 to UTC−4, aligning them with Manaus. The state pushed back, held a referendum, voted to return, and Congress restored the earlier offset. No other Brazilian state has reversed a time zone decision at the ballot box, and the episode is why Acre Time still exists.
Reading Brazil's Time Difference With Cities Abroad
Measured from Brasília and the BRT zone:
City | Difference |
|---|---|
3 hours ahead, 4 during Portuguese summer time | |
4 hours ahead, no seasonal change | |
3 hours behind, 2 during US daylight saving | |
3 hours behind, fixed year-round | |
12 hours ahead, fixed year-round |
Chicago and Mexico City share a gap for part of the year and diverge for the rest; all of that movement comes from the US side.
Scheduling Across a Country Four Hours Wide
Anchor everything to a city, not to a country. A call set for mid-morning in Brasília reaches Manaus an hour earlier and Rio Branco two hours earlier, which is workable; the same call in the late afternoon lands near the end of the Acre working day. Invitations naming only a clock time cause more trouble than the offsets themselves. Nothing drifts seasonally, so a recurring slot fixed once stays correct — and for connecting flights across zones, always confirm schedules directly with the carrier.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in Brazil
Do I need to change my watch in Brazil?
On some routes only — flying west from Rio to Manaus or Rio Branco moves it back, while the whole coast from the South to the Northeast shares one reading.
Which offset does the capital use?
Brasília sits on UTC−3 alongside São Paulo and Recife, so federal deadlines follow the coastal clock rather than the Amazon one.
What exactly does BRT cover?
Only the UTC−3 zone. Treating it as "Brazilian time" is what puts meetings with AMT cities an hour out.
Why do domestic flight times look inconsistent?
Timetables print local time at both ends, so a westbound leg appears shorter than the return over the same distance.
Does any part of Brazil sit ahead of Buenos Aires?
Fernando de Noronha does, by an hour; the mainland matches Argentina wherever it is on UTC−3.
Which identifier should software use for the Northeast?
The same one as São Paulo, since the coast shares that offset — but AMT and ACT locations need their own identifiers, never a single national default.
