Suriname Time Zone: UTC−3, SRT, and No Clock Changes
Suriname reads UTC−3 nationwide and does not move its clocks at any point in the year. The clock above shows Paramaribo, and the same hour applies in every district.

Distance Is a Poor Guide to This Clock
Paramaribo matches São Paulo, not Georgetown. UTC−3 is the most widely used offset in South America, so Suriname reads the same hour as Brazil's coast, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay — capitals thousands of kilometres south. Georgetown, a river crossing to the west, is an hour behind. The offset map and the map of distance do not agree here, and the nearest foreign clock is the one that differs.
Two Empires, One Reading
Dutch and French colonial history converged on the same hour. Suriname was governed from Amsterdam and French Guiana from Paris, capitals that have never shared a clock with each other. Yet the two territories — one independent, one still a French department — now hold identical time along a shared border, arrived at separately and for unrelated reasons.
Nothing Here Moves With the Seasons
The offset is a domestic matter. Neither CARICOM nor any South American body sets clock rules for its members, so nothing external reaches Paramaribo. The country has moved its offset before — it once ran on a half-hour setting, UTC−3:30, before rounding to a whole hour — and each change was a single permanent step, never a seasonal rhythm.
Paramaribo Measured Against Five Cities
City | Difference |
|---|---|
4 hours ahead, or 5 once Europe moves forward | |
8 hours 30 minutes ahead, unchanged | |
11 hours ahead, unchanged | |
11 hours ahead, unchanged | |
Brisbane | 13 hours ahead, unchanged |
Two kinds of partner. Four of these five never shift, so those gaps need checking once and never again. Amsterdam is the exception, and it moves on its own account.
Timing Calls With the Netherlands
Mornings here, afternoons there. The Surinamese community in the Netherlands is large, and the working days overlap comfortably: a call placed early in the Paramaribo day lands in the Dutch working afternoon. After the local lunch hour it arrives once offices there have closed, and that window narrows by a further hour while Dutch summer time is in force. Regional partners need no arithmetic at all.
Six Questions About Time in Suriname
Is Suriname the same time as the Netherlands?
No — Amsterdam runs four or five hours ahead, and all the movement comes from the European side.
Is Suriname ever on the same clock as New York?
No. New York is two hours behind in its winter and one hour behind in its summer, so the two never meet.
Why did the offset move from a half-hour to a whole one?
Half-hour settings complicate every conversion and every timetable; rounding to UTC−3 aligned the country with the offset already dominant across the continent.
Why do old records show UTC−3:30 for Paramaribo?
That was the national offset before the change, so archived timestamps need reading against the date they were written.
Which part of the country sits furthest from its own clock?
The eastern districts, where the sun rises and sets earlier than on the western border while the reading stays the same.
Do the three Guianas share a zone name?
No — SRT, GFT and GYT are three separate labels, and two of them carry the same value.
