DR Congo Time Zones: UTC+1 in the West, UTC+2 in the East

Current time in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: the country uses two offsets and changes neither. Kinshasa and the west read UTC+1; Lubumbashi, Goma and the east read UTC+2. Neither zone observes daylight saving.

  • Western zone: UTC+1 (WAT), identifier Africa/Kinshasa

  • Eastern zone: UTC+2 (CAT), identifier Africa/Lubumbashi

  • Daylight saving: No, in either zone

  • Zones nationwide: Two

Neither zone observes a changeover, so the one-hour internal gap holds in every month of the year.

An Internal Boundary Longer Than Most Borders

The line runs through the middle of the country. The division follows provincial limits across the Congo Basin, separating the capital from the mining and lake regions - and because this is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa, that boundary spans a greater distance than many international frontiers. A domestic flight from Kinshasa to Goma crosses it; a flight from Kinshasa to Brazzaville, in another country entirely, does not.

The Shortest International Crossing Changes Nothing

Kinshasa and Brazzaville face each other across the river. The two capitals are among the closest pairs anywhere in the world, and both hold UTC+1, so the ferry between them keeps one clock. Travel east within the same country and the hour does change.

Four Neighbours Align With One Zone or the Other

Proximity and jurisdiction pull in opposite directions. Congo-Brazzaville shares the western offset; Rwanda and Burundi share the eastern one; Zambia matches the south-east. Goma, Gisenyi just across the Rwandan border and Kigali all read UTC+2, which makes the eastern zone continuous with its neighbours. For most travellers, the only place the hour actually changes is inside the country.

Does Either Zone Change Its Clocks?

No, and neither ever has. Daylight saving has never been introduced in either half, and no framework exists in law to activate. Any adjustment would be a national decision affecting one zone or both - and applying it to only one would widen the internal gap to two hours for part of the year.

Scheduling Inside a Country That Spans Two Hours

Name the city, not the country. A meeting set for mid-morning in Kinshasa reaches Goma an hour later in the local day, which is workable; the same meeting late in the afternoon lands near the end of the eastern working day. Invitations quoting only a clock time cause more confusion here than the offsets themselves. Nothing drifts seasonally, so a slot fixed once stays correct - the only question is which of the two readings it refers to.

Common Questions About Time in DR Congo

How many time zones does DR Congo have?
Two, an hour apart, with no seasonal variation in either.

Which identifier covers Kinshasa?
Africa/Kinshasa for the west, Africa/Lubumbashi for the east. A single national default will put half the country out by an hour.

Is Kinshasa the same time as Brazzaville?
Yes, permanently - the river crossing changes nothing.

Does Goma keep Rwandan time?
Effectively yes. Goma, Gisenyi across the border and Kigali all read UTC+2.

Why do domestic flight times look inconsistent?
Timetables print local time at both ends, so an eastbound leg appears an hour longer than the same distance westbound. Always confirm schedules directly with the carrier.

Which side of the boundary do the mining provinces sit on?
The eastern one, on UTC+2, along with the Great Lakes region.
