Daylight Saving Time (DST) is observed in most of Canada. Clocks spring forward one hour on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November.
Exceptions â regions that do not observe DST:
Saskatchewan stays on Central Standard Time (CST, UTCâ6) year-round
Yukon permanently uses Mountain Standard Time (MST, UTCâ7) since 2020
Small pockets of British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec also skip DST
Key Facts About Time in Canada
Sandford Fleming invented Standard Time. A Scottish-born Canadian engineer, Fleming proposed dividing the world into 24 equal time zones in 1876 after missing a train due to inconsistent local times. His system was adopted internationally in 1884.
Newfoundland's unique 30-minute offset. Newfoundland Standard Time (NST, UTCâ3:30) exists because Newfoundland was a separate British Dominion when time zones were established, and it chose a half-hour offset to better match its geographic position. This gave rise to the iconic CBC announcement: "Tonight at 8:00, 8:30 in Newfoundland."
Saskatchewan never changes its clocks. The province stays on CST year-round, meaning it aligns with Alberta in summer and Manitoba in winter.
The most famous clocks in Canada
Peace Tower Clock â Ottawa, Ontario. The centrepiece of Parliament Hill, completed in 1927 as a memorial to Canadians who died in World War I. The tower houses a 53-bell carillon and its clock is synchronized with the National Research Council's atomic clock. It appears on the Canadian $20 bill.
Gastown Steam Clock â Vancouver, British Columbia. One of only a few functioning steam-powered clocks in the world. Built in 1977, it whistles and releases steam clouds every 15 minutes playing the Westminster Quarters. One of the most photographed landmarks in Vancouver.

Best Time to Call Canada
Practical overlapping hours for international coordination:
From the UK (London): Best window is 9:00 AM â 1:00 PM London time, which is 4:00 AM â 9:00 AM EDT - so afternoons in the UK work best for reaching Canadian business hours.

From India (IST): The overlap is tight. 6:30 PM â 9:30 PM IST corresponds to 9:00 AM â 12:00 PM EDT - early evening India time is the sweet spot.
From Australia (AEST): Very limited overlap. 11:00 PM â 1:00 AM AEST aligns with 9:00 AM â 11:00 AM EDT - early morning Canada / late night Australia.
Within Canada: When scheduling TorontoâVancouver calls, note the 3-hour difference. A 9:00 AM meeting in Vancouver is noon in Toronto.
