Tanzania Time Zone: UTC+3 (EAT) and the Hour Counted From Sunrise
Tanzania uses East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3, with no daylight saving. The offset is straightforward; the way the hour is spoken in Swahili is not - the count starts at dawn, six hours away from the international reading.

Saa Moja: Why Local Time Is Named Six Hours Off
Swahili time numbers the hours from dawn rather than midnight. In everyday speech saa moja - the first hour - falls at what a phone displays as seven o'clock, and the count runs on through the day and again through the night. The offset behind both readings is the same UTC+3; only the naming differs. Written schedules use the international form: airlines, government notices and hotel bookings publish in the 24-hour clock, while a time arranged verbally may not - and a six-hour gap is obvious enough to catch quickly, though better avoided by confirming which form is meant.
A Union With Two Governments and a Single Reading
Zanzibar legislates for itself and reads the mainland's hour. The archipelago holds semi-autonomous status within the union, with its own president and house of representatives, but time is not among its competences. Stone Town, Pemba and the mainland all read the same minute, and Swahili time is used across the islands too - so the ferry across the channel changes jurisdiction without changing the clock or the convention for naming it.
The Identifier Names the Former Capital
Dodoma is the capital; the entry says Dar es Salaam. The seat of government moved inland, and the database kept its string under the coastal city - identifiers are stable values rather than descriptions of current administration. Both read the same hour, so the split matters only when storing a value: no Africa/Dodoma exists, and none for Zanzibar either.
Daylight Saving Time in Tanzania: Why a Changeover Would Break the Naming
No seasonal variant has ever applied, and the Swahili count is part of the reason it would not fit. The whole country lies west of the meridian anchoring UTC+3, so the clock already runs ahead of the sun - by a little on the coast and considerably more toward Kigoma in the far west. A forward hour would push saa moja further from the sunrise it is named for, in a system that works precisely because equatorial dawn holds steady through the year.
Border Time Differences: Five Neighbours an Hour Behind
Kenya and Uganda match; the western and southern borders do not. Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique all hold UTC+2, an hour behind Tanzania, as do the DR Congo's eastern provinces. With eight land neighbours split between two offsets, Tanzania borders more countries on a different reading than most African states, and the line runs down its western and southern flanks - fixed in every month, since nothing in either band runs a changeover.

Business Hours for a Port Serving Two Offsets
Dar es Salaam handles freight for neighbours an hour behind. Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, Burundi and the Congolese Copperbelt all route cargo through the port, and every one of them sits on UTC+2 - so the corridor inland crosses an offset line, and a slot booked at the quay is an hour later than the same clock reading upcountry. Uganda and Kenya share UTC+3 instead, which makes the northern routes the conversion-free ones. Europe is level or an hour behind depending on its season.
