Thailand Time Zone: One Offset and Two Ways of Saying the Hour

Seven ahead, never adjusted. Thailand reads UTC+7 under the regional name Indochina Time, and the record holds no seasonal rule at any point. Add seven hours to UTC for the local figure. Coming from elsewhere, take seven and subtract the other place's own distance from UTC, letting a minus sign widen the answer rather than close it.

  • Time zone: UTC+7, Indochina Time

  • Daylight saving: Never used

  • IANA identifier: Asia/Bangkok

  • Zones in use: One, across every province

  • Land neighbours: Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia

Business Hours and the Working Week

A conventional five days. Offices run Monday to Friday with the weekend off, government departments generally from half past eight until half past four and private firms a little later. The weekly pattern needs no translating for a Western counterpart.

Light on a narrow band. Bangkok sits near fourteen degrees north, so the day moves only between about eleven and a half hours in December and a little over thirteen in June. Sunrise stays within roughly half an hour of six all year, which is why no season here has ever made a case for moving the clock.

Bangkok Local Time Against the Cities That Book It

Anchor on the local noon. Bangkok passes midday at 05:00 UTC. Munich opening at nine finds three in the Thai afternoon through winter and two in summer, while nine in Seattle corresponds to midnight here.

The Spoken Clock That Counts to Six

Four quarters, not two halves. Alongside the official twenty-four hour figures, Thai speech uses a much older system that splits the day into four blocks of six hours and counts from one to six inside each. The words come from sounds rather than numbers: a gong for the daytime hours, a drum for the evening ones, and the striking of temple bells for the hours before dawn.

Where visitors come unstuck. In that system, one in the evening means seven o'clock at night and four in the evening means ten. A time heard in conversation and the same number read from a printed schedule can therefore be six hours apart. Signs, tickets and government notices use the official figures; spoken arrangements often do not, so it is worth repeating a time back in the twenty-four hour form.

Daylight Saving Time Has Never Been Tried Here

Nothing on file at all. The record for this zone contains no seasonal transition in either direction and never has, which puts Thailand among the countries with the cleanest timekeeping history in the region. Every figure quoted here is permanent at the Thai end.

A meridian near the middle. The offset came from choosing the hundred and fifth meridian in 1920, a line running through the north-east of the country and roughly splitting its longitudinal span. That choice replaced the older capital-based reading and advanced clocks by about eighteen minutes.

Local Time Questions Travellers Send About Thailand

What year appears on Thai documents?
A Buddhist Era year, five hundred and forty-three higher than the Gregorian one, on an otherwise identical calendar with the same months and days.

Is the whole country on one clock?
Yes, from Chiang Rai in the north to the southern border, with no provincial exception.

Does Thailand share its time with Vietnam?
Exactly, and with Laos and Cambodia too. All four use the same name and the same figure.

When does the date change against UTC?
At 17:00 UTC, landing in the late afternoon on a European clock.

Why does a Thai schedule use four-digit times?
Because the official system is the twenty-four hour one, and it exists partly to remove the ambiguity the spoken system creates.

Which record should software store?
Asia/Bangkok. With no transitions on file, a fixed number happens to give the same answer here, which is rare.

Border Time Differences at Both Ends of the Country

Half an hour west, a whole hour south. Two of the four frontiers change nothing: Laos and Cambodia hold the identical figure. The other two do not. Myanmar reads thirty minutes earlier along the western boundary, and Malaysia reads a full hour later at the southern one.

A range of ninety minutes. Between the earliest neighbouring clock and the latest lies an hour and a half, and none of the four adjusts seasonally, so each step applies in every month.
