What Time Is It in India Right Now?

Half an hour off the hour. India runs on UTC+5:30 the whole year as India Standard Time (IST), with no seasonal adjustment anywhere in the country. Local time is UTC plus five and a half hours. India Standard Time (IST) and the Half-Hour UTC Offset

A recent unification. The single clock is younger than it looks. Kolkata and Mumbai each kept a city time of their own long after a national standard existed, the last holding out until 1955. Only then did one reading truly cover the country.

Tea garden time. An informal second clock survives in the north-east, an hour ahead of the national one and known as chai bagan or tea garden time. It began with the colonial tea estates, has no statutory basis and appears in no database, yet plantations still work to it. The reason is plain: the sun comes up in the far north-east roughly two hours before it does in the far west, and a labour statute lets state governments set industry hours to suit local daylight.

Border Time Differences Around the Subcontinent

Every step a fraction. Six countries touch India, and only Myanmar differs by a clean whole hour. Pakistan sits thirty minutes behind, Bangladesh and Bhutan thirty minutes ahead, Myanmar an hour ahead and China two and a half hours ahead.

A quarter-hour frontier. Nepal is the outlier at fifteen minutes ahead, and since Nepal's only other neighbour lies more than two hours away on the clock, this is the sole land border on earth where a watch moves by a quarter of an hour. Not one of the six neighbours adjusts for the seasons, so every step here is a constant.

Fix it to Indian noon. New Delhi reaches midday at 06:30 UTC. Nine in the morning in London is half past two in the Indian afternoon, half past one once Britain is on summer time; nine in New York is half past seven in the evening here.

A five-day week. Offices generally keep Monday through Friday, the weekend falling on Saturday and Sunday, with many running from around half past nine to half past six. The long overlap with European afternoons is a large part of why so much back-office work is routed here.

Half past everything. Because the offset lands on a half hour, almost no international meeting sits on a round number at both ends. A call at the top of the hour in Europe or America always reads half past something here, and hand-typed invitations lose those thirty minutes more often than they lose anything else.

Why does India have only one time zone?
Chiefly cohesion and cost. A split would complicate railway signalling at the boundary, and banking, aviation and broadcasting would all need reworking, so successive reviews have left the single clock alone.

Why is India half an hour out from most other countries?
Because the reference meridian sits between two whole-hour lines rather than on one, a legacy of choosing a longitude near the centre of the country.

Has a second time zone been formally proposed?
Yes. The national metrology laboratory has set out a two-zone scheme, with the eastern one an hour ahead, but it has never been put into law.
