Myanmar Standard Time (MMT): What the UTC Offset Record Holds

The number outlasted the labels. Almost everything attached to this clock has been renamed at some point. The offset was fixed under the old colonial administration and carried the name Burma Standard Time; the country became Myanmar; the city of Rangoon became Yangon; the seat of government left that city altogether for a purpose-built capital inland. What travellers notice is the shape rather than the size: this is a country you can leave in either direction and land on a half hour rather than a whole one.

Offices and the week. Government departments and most businesses keep Monday to Friday, opening around half past nine and closing in the late afternoon, with Saturday and Sunday off. Banks run a narrower window inside that, and shops on a wider one.

Light within a narrow band. Sitting well inside the tropics, Yangon sees roughly eleven hours of daylight near the December solstice and a little over thirteen in June. Sunrise sits close to six the whole year round, so no month here forces an early start into darkness.

Take the local midday. Yangon passes noon at 05:30 UTC. Warsaw beginning work at nine coincides with half past two here in winter and half past one in summer; nine in New York corresponds to half past eight the same evening.

Daylight Saving Time Has Never Applied Here
