Sierra Leone Time Zone: UTC+0 (GMT) After a Summer Hour That Lasted Forty Minutes
Sierra Leone uses Greenwich Mean Time, UTC+0, with no daylight saving. The country did run a seasonal changeover for decades - but not by an hour: clocks went forward by forty minutes each June and came back in two separate steps of twenty.

The Clock Changes That Went Forty Minutes Forward
The old changeover used intervals nobody else used. Through the 1930s and into the 1940s clocks in Freetown went forward forty minutes on 1 June, back twenty on 1 September, and back another twenty on 1 October - three transitions a year rather than two, none of them a whole hour. A final permanent change came in 1962, when the country moved back an hour and settled on GMT.
The shift also ran the wrong way for the geography. Freetown lies near 13°15′W while keeping an offset anchored at zero, so the clock already sits most of an hour ahead of the local sun; the forty-minute summer step pushed that gap further still, rather than correcting it. Nothing has moved since 1962, and timestamps from that era convert with no modern offset.
A Deep-Water Harbour and the Clock That Serves It
Freetown's estuary is among the largest natural deep-water anchorages in the world. Maritime work runs on UTC by convention, and the national offset is the same figure - so a vessel's log, a berth allocation and a customs entry all carry one reading with nothing to reconcile between them. For a country whose link to everywhere else has always been the port, that alignment does more work than it appears to.
Inside the Largest Single-Offset Block in Africa
Guinea and Liberia hold UTC+0, and so does everything around them. Sierra Leone has only two neighbours and neither moves a watch, but the continuity runs much further: Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana and Togo all read the same hour. The offset only changes at Cabo Verde across open water to the north-west, or several borders inland where Mali meets Niger and Algeria.
Daylight Saving Time in Sierra Leone: Discontinued Long Ago
The seasonal rule was abandoned, not suspended. No mechanism remains in law to reactivate, and reintroducing one would mean legislating from scratch. Nothing in the surrounding block runs a changeover either, so there is no regional schedule to rejoin.

Business Hours for Mining Contracts and Shipping Schedules
Buyers in Europe and Asia both quote UTC. The country's mineral exports settle against contracts written in the international standard, and the local clock produces that figure without conversion. European counterparts are one or two hours ahead and share almost the whole working day; Asian buyers close before the Freetown afternoon is well started, so anything eastward belongs in the local morning. New York opens only as the day here is ending.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in Sierra Leone
Is Sierra Leone on GMT all year?
Yes. There is no summer variant, so the offset is correct on any date.
Did Sierra Leone ever use daylight saving time?
It did, until the 1940s - with a forty-minute forward shift rather than an hour, removed in two steps of twenty minutes.
Do either of the borders change the hour?
No. Guinea and Liberia both hold UTC+0 with no changeover.
Which is the nearest place on a different offset?
Cabo Verde, an hour behind at UTC−1, across open water rather than a land border.
Why does the sun rise so late in Freetown?
Because the city sits most of an hour of solar time west of the Greenwich meridian while keeping Greenwich time.
Does the interior differ from Freetown?
No. Bo, Kenema, Makeni and the capital all read one national time.
Which identifier should software store?
Africa/Freetown, which carries the historical transitions as well as the current offset.
