Why the Country Uses a European Offset Rather Than a West African One
Geography says one thing, administration another. Algeria sits in North Africa yet keeps the offset used across much of continental Europe. The alignment dates from the colonial period but was not simply inherited: the country moved between a UTC+0 and a UTC+1 base several times after independence before settling permanently in 1981. The result is a permanent UTC+1 offset that matches Paris for part of the year and sits an hour behind it for the rest.
How Many Time Zones Does Algeria Use?
One, without exception. Every city follows the same official time, from Algiers and Constantine on the coast to Tlemcen in the west and the Saharan south. The only difference is local sunrise and sunset, because the country spans more than sixteen degrees of longitude - roughly a zone and a half - and the sun arrives over an hour apart at its two extremes. A split has nonetheless never been introduced.
Does Algeria Observe Daylight Saving Time?
No, and it has not since 1981.
The local reading never needs adjusting in any season.
The gap with Europe still moves twice a year, driven entirely by the European side.
Reintroducing seasonal changes would take a new government decision; no standing rule exists in law.
Local Time Compared With Europe and North America
Location | Northern winter | Northern summer |
|---|---|---|
Same time | 1 hour ahead | |
1 hour behind | Same time | |
6 hours behind | 5 hours behind | |
2 hours ahead | 2 hours ahead | |
3 hours ahead | 3 hours ahead |
The last two rows repeat because neither Istanbul nor Dubai changes clocks either - which is why UTC, not a European city, is the safer anchor for a recurring meeting.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in Algeria
What time is it in Algeria right now?
The live clock at the top of this page shows it. The country holds one offset at every moment of the year.
Is Algeria GMT+1?
Yes in practice - GMT+1 and UTC+1 describe the same offset here, and it applies in every season.
Does Algeria change its clocks?
No. Any change in the gap with a contact abroad originates on their side.
Is Algeria one hour behind France?
Only in the northern summer. In winter the two share the same clock; France then moves forward and opens an hour's gap.
Is Algeria the same time as Morocco?
Usually yes. The exception is Ramadan, when Morocco drops back an hour for the month while Algeria stays put.
Is Algeria on the same time as Tunisia?
Yes, permanently - a flight between Algiers and Tunis needs no adjustment in either direction.
Does Algeria use the same time as its Sahel neighbours?
Niger matches it exactly, but Mali and Mauritania sit an hour behind, so a southbound land crossing costs an hour while an eastbound one does not.
The Ramadan Exception on the Western Border
Two frontiers shift, briefly. Of Algeria's seven land neighbours, only Morocco and Western Sahara ever change their time relationship with it, stepping back an hour for the month of Ramadan while Algeria holds steady. Because Ramadan follows the lunar calendar, that month drifts through the Gregorian year rather than landing on fixed dates - so when the exact relationship matters, check Rabat against Algiers in the converter above rather than relying on a fixed figure.
Business Hours and the Sunday-to-Thursday Week
Friday and Saturday are the weekend. The working week runs Sunday to Thursday, so the overlap with a Monday-to-Friday partner is four days rather than five. The office day also starts earlier than in western Europe, meaning a caller who waits until their own afternoon often reaches the tail of the local day.
Best Time to Call Algeria From Europe, North America, and Asia
Aim for the local mid-morning to late afternoon; the window below is expressed in the caller's own clock.
