Ghana Time Zone: UTC+0 (GMT) and the Land Closest to Zero-Zero
Ghana uses Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), UTC+0, with no daylight saving. The offset has been fixed since the early 1940s - and the meridian GMT is named after crosses Ghanaian soil before it reaches the sea.

Crossing Between Hemispheres Without Changing the Local Time
Zero degrees longitude runs up the eastern side of the country. The line enters near Tema and continues north through the Volta region, so a road east from Accra passes from the western hemisphere into the eastern one with nothing happening to a watch. Longitude zero is a boundary for coordinates, not for offsets - and the nearest actual offset boundary lies two countries away. Zero latitude and zero longitude meet in open water south of Tema, which makes Ghana the closest country to the point where the whole coordinate grid begins.
The Twenty-Minute Daylight Saving Time Ghana Once Used
Clocks moved forward by twenty minutes, not sixty. From 1919 until 1942 the territory advanced its time by a third of an hour each year, and the shift ran from the start of September to the end of December rather than across the northern summer. That put the country on UTC+00:20, an interval almost nowhere else has used as a legal time. The practice ended during the Second World War and has not returned, which is why historical timestamps from those decades need care while everything since reads straight through on GMT.
Clock Changes Today: None Anywhere in the Region
No seasonal variant exists in current law. The whole West African picture holds still through the year, so there is no schedule for Ghana to rejoin and nothing sitting dormant to switch on. Reintroducing an adjustment would mean legislating from scratch - the historical version is not a template anyone else uses.
Neighbours on Both Sides of the Offset Line
All three land borders read GMT. Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north and Togo to the east all hold UTC+0, so no Ghanaian crossing moves the hour. Continue past Togo into Benin, however, and the clock goes forward an hour - which is where the GMT block ends on this coast.

Working Across the Atlantic and Toward the Gulf
London is level in winter, an hour ahead in summer. That makes the whole Ghanaian day workable with Britain, and the shift belongs entirely to the European side. New York opens as the local afternoon runs on, leaving a genuine late window rather than none - useful for a country with business ties in both directions. Regional partners in Abidjan, Lomé and Ouagadougou need no conversion at all; Lagos, an hour ahead, is the one that requires a moment's thought.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in Ghanaм
Is Ghana on GMT all year?
Yes. There is no summer variant, so the offset is correct on any date.
Which neighbour is an hour ahead?
None of the three. Togo holds UTC+0 as well; only Nigeria, further east, sits on UTC+1.
Does the Volta region keep a different hour?
No. Ho, Tamale and Accra all read the same, either side of the meridian.
Is Ghana ahead of or behind Johannesburg?
Behind by two hours, in every month - South Africa holds UTC+2 and neither side shifts.
Is Ghana behind Asia by a full day?
Not by a day, but for much of the working day Shanghai and Singapore have already moved to the following date.
Is Ghana the same time as London?
Through the British winter, yes. London then moves to summer time and reads an hour ahead.
Which identifier should software store?
Africa/Accra, which covers the whole country.
