Almost nowhere else does. Europe and North America shift on a Sunday; Egypt chose Friday, because it is the weekend in most sectors and the lost or gained hour disrupts the fewest working schedules. The practical consequence is that Egyptian transition dates never coincide with European or American ones - so the gap with those places changes on a date of its own, several weeks away from theirs.

Abandoned, Reinstated, and Running Again

Seasonal time returned in 2023 after eight years without it, with energy consumption cited as the reason to resume - the same reason that had been given for stopping. The law fixed the schedule rather than leaving it to annual decision, which is why the dates now repeat. Earlier practice was less predictable: clocks were sometimes turned back for the month of Ramadan and forward again afterwards, producing four changes in a single year. That is not part of the current arrangement, but it is why records from those years need care.

Egypt Changes Clocks; Its African Neighbours Do Not

Libya and Sudan hold UTC+2 all year. That makes the gap along those borders seasonal in an unusual direction: Egypt matches both neighbours through the cooler months and pulls an hour ahead of them for the summer, entirely because of movement on the Egyptian side. Israel shares the same standard offset and a similar summer one, but shifts on its own dates, so the two are briefly out of step twice a year.

One Zone, No Regional Exceptions

The switch applies nationwide on the same night. Alexandria on the coast, Aswan in the south, Sinai and the Red Sea resorts all move together - there is no separate arrangement for the peninsula and no regional exception anywhere.

Athens holds level all year because Greece uses the same pair of offsets - the two move together rather than apart. The fixed-offset rows shift because only Egypt moves.

Twice a year the usual figure is wrong for a few weeks. Europe springs forward about a month before Egypt does, so through that window Cairo and Paris read the same clock rather than differing by an hour, and Cairo sits an hour ahead of London instead of two. North America moves earlier still, opening a window where Cairo is six hours ahead of New York rather than seven. The autumn gap is shorter but works the same way.

Store the Zone, Not the Number

A recurring meeting saved as Africa/Cairo survives every transition automatically. One saved as a bare UTC+2 or UTC+3 breaks at each of them. The Gulf is the direction to watch: Dubai is two hours ahead in the Egyptian winter and one in summer, so a standing call with the Emirates shifts within the working day rather than staying put.
