South Africa Time Zone: UTC+2 (SAST) With Three Capitals on One Clock

Three Capitals, and the Identifier Names None of Them
Pretoria administers, Cape Town legislates, Bloemfontein judges - and the database says Johannesburg. Each capital holds a separate branch of government, and the time zone entry takes the largest city instead, as identifiers generally do. All four read the same hour, so the split matters only when storing a value: there is no Africa/Pretoria or Africa/Cape_Town to fall back on.
A Zone Name Four Neighbours Borrow
SAST is the label, not the ownership. Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia carry South Africa Standard Time as their zone name while keeping their own identifiers, and Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique hold the identical offset under the Central Africa Time label instead. Two names, one figure, across the whole southern third of the continent - and every one of those countries stores its own string rather than this one.
Why the Subantarctic Islands Keep Mainland Local Time
Marion Island and Prince Edward Island read Johannesburg's hour. The two lie roughly two thousand kilometres south-east of the mainland, deep in the Southern Ocean, and the research station on Marion works to SAST like any office in Gauteng. They sit almost due south of the country rather than east or west of it, and longitude is the only dimension a time zone measures - so the offset holds despite a latitude far enough south to produce a real seasonal swing in daylight.
An Attempt at Daylight Saving, Long Since Ended
The changeover ran during wartime and was not revived. South Africa operated a seasonal shift for a period in the twentieth century, abandoned it, and has held a fixed UTC+2 since. The question has been raised again, usually in connection with electricity demand, without a change following. Any return would need a national decision, and it would break an alignment that every land neighbour currently shares.
Where the Offset Line Falls Around South Africa
Every land neighbour matches. Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini and Lesotho all hold UTC+2 with no changeover, so no border here moves a watch. That was not always true: Namibia ran a seasonal rule until 2017 and spent half of each year an hour behind, making the western frontier the last one in the region to vary.

The Market Day That Bridges London and Asia
Johannesburg's exchange opens before Europe and closes after Asia. The financial centre sits two hours ahead of London for part of the year and one for the rest, so the local afternoon overlaps the European morning in every season. Asian counterparts take the South African morning - Mumbai three and a half hours ahead, Singapore six - and are closing as the day here gets under way. New York opens only as the local day ends, which makes the transatlantic window a narrow evening one rather than a working overlap.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in South Africa
How many time zones does South Africa have?
One, covering the mainland and the subantarctic islands alike.
Do Cape Town and Pretoria differ?
No. All three capitals and every province read the same hour.
Did South Africa ever use daylight saving time?
Yes, during wartime. The changeover was ended and no version has applied since.
Do any borders change the hour?
None of the six. Every neighbour holds UTC+2 without a seasonal rule.
Is South Africa the same time as Egypt?
For part of the year. Egypt shares UTC+2 in the cooler months and moves an hour ahead each summer.
Why does the gap with London narrow in summer?
Britain moves forward an hour while South Africa holds still.
Which identifier should software store?
Africa/Johannesburg. It is the canonical entry, and none of the three capitals has a string of its own.
