Bangladesh Time Zone: a Whole Hour Between Two Fractional Neighbours

Wedged in the middle. Bangladesh holds UTC+6 through the whole year as Bangladesh Standard Time (BST), and no part of the country adjusts for the seasons. To convert, add six hours to UTC. Starting instead from where you are, subtract your own offset from six, and where that offset is below zero the two figures add rather than cancel: UTC+2 falls four hours short, UTC-5 eleven.

  • Time zone: UTC+6 (BST)

  • Daylight saving: Not observed

  • IANA identifier: Asia/Dhaka

  • Zones nationwide: One

  • Land neighbours: India and Myanmar only

Border Time Differences With India and Myanmar

Fractions on both sides. Bangladesh is the rare country whose every land neighbour keeps a fractional offset. India holds UTC+5:30 and Myanmar UTC+6:30, which places this clock at the exact midpoint of the two, thirty minutes from each. No other whole-hour reading in the world is bracketed so evenly by half-hour ones.

Steps in one direction. Crossing the region west to east therefore means two separate thirty-minute advances rather than one hourly jump. Road and rail crossings carry that adjustment; always confirm schedules directly. Neither neighbour changes clocks seasonally, so both steps hold in every month.

Daylight Saving Time and the Experiment That Was Not Repeated

Clocks moved once. The number of zones has never been argued over here; the value of the offset briefly was. Clocks went forward an hour on the evening of 19 June 2009, putting the country on UTC+7 to ease an electricity shortfall, and back an hour on 31 December of the same year. A repeat was drafted for the following spring, then dropped before it began.

Nothing entered since. No transition has been recorded for Asia/Dhaka after that reversal and no forward rule is stored. Those two dates remain the only entries of their kind.

Business Hours, Calling Windows and the Gazette

Set by gazette. Office hours are fixed nationally by government notification rather than left to each employer, and the published span has been rewritten more than once, between a nine-to-four and a nine-to-five day. Bank counters open on a shorter window inside whichever schedule is current.

Where the week bends. Sunday to Thursday is the working week, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend, so anyone keeping a Monday-to-Friday calendar loses a day at each end of the overlap. A European morning still reaches Dhaka in mid-afternoon, while an American morning arrives after the working day has ended.

Light on a narrow band. Sunrise shifts only between about ten past five in early June and a quarter to seven in mid-January, with sunset moving between roughly quarter past five and quarter to seven in the evening. In any month, the Bangladeshi working day opens well after first light.

Questions People Type About Bangladesh Local Time

Which calendar dates a Bangladeshi invoice?
Often the Bengali one, or Bangabda, whose year runs 593 or 594 behind the Gregorian. The reformed version used here fixes the new year to 14 April, while West Bengal across the border keeps the older astronomical reckoning and can land a day later.

Does the Bangladeshi week line up with the Gulf?
Largely, yes. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman keep the same Sunday-to-Thursday pattern, so all five days overlap rather than four.

When does Bangladesh reach the next date before Europe does?
At 18:00 UTC, which is early evening in London and an hour later on the clock there in summer.

Which other countries keep UTC+6 all year?
Bhutan and Kyrgyzstan hold the same offset year-round, though neither shares a land border with Bangladesh.

Why was the repeat of the clock change dropped?
The government withdrew it citing public interest, and pointed specifically to schoolchildren who would have had to leave home before first light.

Do any cities in Bangladesh keep a different time?
None. A single reading covers everywhere from Chattogram in the south-east to Rajshahi in the north-west, and no district keeps a separate one.
