Montserrat Time Zone: Fixed UTC−4 and a Clock Kept for Brades
Four hours behind UTC, always. Montserrat keeps Atlantic Standard Time at UTC−4 every day of the year, with no summer time and no seasonal switch. Subtract four hours from UTC and that is local time across the territory; the converter above does the same sum against any city you name.
Offset: UTC−4, unchanging

Why Local Time Here Is Quoted for Brades
The capital has no one to keep time for. Plymouth remains the capital in law, but the town was evacuated during the Soufrière Hills eruption and permanently abandoned in 1997, buried under volcanic flows; the seat of government moved north the following year to Brades, a settlement of about a thousand people. Time services therefore quote the territory's clock for Brades and attach a note explaining that the official capital has been evacuated. A new capital is under construction at Little Bay, which will in time move the label again without moving the hour.
Why One UTC Offset Covers the Whole Territory
A small inhabited north. The southern part of the island lies inside a volcanic exclusion zone with controlled access, so settlement is concentrated in the north, within a few kilometres end to end. Brades, Little Bay, Salem, Look Out and the airport at Gerald's all read the same figure at the same instant, and no part of the territory has ever kept a separate offset.
Why the UTC Offset Never Changes
No seasonal case to make. At around sixteen degrees north the longest and shortest days differ modestly, so a spring shift would buy an evening hour the tropics largely supply already. Montserrat has never observed a seasonal change, and the islands it is most closely tied to hold the same fixed offset - so every gap on this page either holds constant or moves entirely from the other end.
Time Difference From Major World Hubs
City | Northern winter | Northern summer |
|---|---|---|
Same time | Same time | |
Halifax | Same time | 1 hour ahead |
1 hour behind | Same time | |
1 hour behind | 1 hour behind | |
1 hour ahead | 1 hour ahead | |
4 hours ahead | 5 hours ahead | |
4 hours behind | 3 hours behind |
Three rows explain the matches. St John's reads the same in both columns because Antigua holds the identical fixed offset. Halifax matches only in winter: it uses the same zone name, Atlantic Standard Time, but adds a summer hour that Montserrat does not. New York matches only in summer, climbing to UTC−4 each spring on its own seasonal clock. Kingston and São Paulo never vary, both on fixed offsets, while London and Los Angeles are the rows whose gaps move - always from their side.
Business Hours and the Antigua Connection
No conversion on the way in. Almost every arrival comes through Antigua, which holds the same fixed UTC−4, so a printed departure and arrival are on one clock and the crossing needs no arithmetic. Europe needs care: London is four hours ahead in the British winter and five in the British summer, putting a London afternoon in the middle of the local morning. North America is easier - level with New York through the American summer, an hour ahead in winter. Ferry and flight frequencies vary through the year, so a connection running in one season may not run in another. Always confirm schedules directly with the operator.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in Montserrat
Why do clocks for Montserrat show Brades rather than Plymouth?
Because Plymouth, although still the capital in law, has been abandoned since the eruption. Brades has been the seat of government since the following year, so it serves as the reference locality.
Does Montserrat change its clocks?
No. The offset holds at UTC−4 all year, so a Montserratian reading is the same against UTC in January as in July.
Is Montserrat the same time as Antigua?
Yes, in every week of the year. Both hold a fixed UTC−4, which is why transfers between them need no adjustment.
Is Atlantic Standard Time here the same as in Canada?
The winter reading matches, but Atlantic Canada adds a summer hour and Montserrat does not, so the two agree for only part of the year.
Is it the same time as New York?
Through the American summer, yes. Once New York returns to standard time in autumn, Montserrat is an hour ahead.
Do timetables here use the 24-hour clock?
Both forms appear. Airline and ferry schedules often use 24-hour notation, while everyday usage keeps the 12-hour form with am and pm.
