Maldives Time Zone: a Fixed UTC Offset Across the Atolls

Five ahead, unmoving. The Maldives keeps UTC+5 in every month as Maldives Time (MVT), with no daylight saving. Local time is UTC plus five hours. From your own clock, take five and remove your offset, adding it where that offset is negative: UTC+1 sits four hours behind, UTC-5 ten.

One Time Zone for a Country Spread Across the Equator

Long, but narrow. The Maldives stretches a long way from north to south, across the equator itself, yet barely at all from east to west. Because time zones follow longitude, that north-south spread costs nothing on the clock, so one reading covers every atoll from the far north to the far south without straining against the sun.

Resort time. An informal second clock exists in practice. Many resort islands run an hour or more ahead of the national reading, on their own "resort time", to give guests longer daylight in the afternoon. It has no official standing and appears in no database, but a traveller can find the island clock differs from the one in the capital.

Daylight Saving Time and a Clock the Equator Never Needs to Move

Nothing to gain. Sitting on the equator, the country sees almost no seasonal variation in daylight: the sun rises close to six and sets close to six in every month. Summer time exists to push daylight into the evening, and here there is no surplus to push, so no transition has ever been entered for the zone.

Fixed for converters. With one offset and no switching, any gap measured against the Maldives moves only when the far end changes. A difference worked out in January still holds in July.

Time Differences Without a Land Border

A sea in every direction. The Maldives touches no country by land, so no offset change is ever driven into on a road. The nearest clocks lie across water: Sri Lanka and India to the north-east read UTC+5:30, half an hour ahead, so a short flight that way nudges the clock forward by thirty minutes.

A half-hour ring. India and Sri Lanka sitting on a fractional offset means the nearest crossings are all half-hour steps rather than whole hours, which is unusual. Further off, the British Indian Ocean Territory to the south keeps UTC+6, an hour ahead.

Business Hours and the Sunday to Thursday Week

The week opens on Sunday. The working week runs Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the weekend, so four working days overlap with a Monday-to-Friday counterpart rather than five. Government offices commonly run from around eight into the early afternoon.

A near-flat daylight year. Sitting on the equator, the Maldives sees the sun rise around six and set around six in every month, with only a few minutes of variation across the year. There is no dark season, and no clock change to complicate one.

Common Questions on Local Time in the Maldives

Does the Maldives observe daylight saving?
No. The clock holds at UTC+5 through the whole year.

Why does my resort clock differ from the capital's?
Many resorts run their own "resort time", an hour or more ahead of the national clock, to lengthen the daylight afternoon. It is informal and applies only on the island.

Is the Maldives the same time as Pakistan?
Yes. Both read UTC+5 with no seasonal change, so Malé and Karachi keep the same clock all year.

When does the Maldivian date change against UTC?
At 19:00 UTC. From that point the local calendar has turned while Europe is still in the afternoon or early evening.

Is Sunday a working day in the Maldives?
Yes. Sunday opens the week, and Friday and Saturday are the days off.

What are typical office hours?
Broadly eight into the early afternoon on weekdays, with a Sunday-to-Thursday week.
