Jersey Time Zone: GMT, BST and a Second Timetable Set by the Moon
London's clock, Norman coast. Jersey keeps Greenwich Mean Time at UTC+0 through the winter half of the year and British Summer Time at UTC+1 through the summer half. Local time equals UTC in winter and runs an hour ahead of it in summer; the converter above does the same sum against any city you name. The United Kingdom reads identically all year, France an hour ahead.
Winter clock: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), UTC+0
Summer clock: British Summer Time (BST), UTC+1
Switch pattern: Forward in spring, back in autumn

The Timetable That Local Time Cannot Give You
Fifty minutes later each day. Jersey has the third largest tidal range on earth - close to twelve metres on the biggest tides of the year, against two to five along the English coast. On the south-east side the sea withdraws as much as two miles, and the causeways to Elizabeth Castle and to the lighthouse at La Corbière are cut off twice a day. The clock on this page governs none of it: the tidal cycle is lunar, running a little over twelve hours and drifting roughly fifty minutes later each day, so the same civil hour gives a different answer every morning about where a person can safely stand.
Why One UTC Offset Covers the Whole Bailiwick
Too small to divide. Saint Helier, Gorey, Saint Aubin and every parish between show the same figure at the same instant, and no part of the Bailiwick has ever kept a reading of its own. The database gives Jersey a full entry, Europe/Jersey, because it carries its own country code rather than because its rules differ from London's - they do not.
Daylight Saving Time Dates and the French Coast
Adopted, not received. As a Crown Dependency rather than part of the United Kingdom, Jersey is not automatically covered by British legislation: the switch dates apply because the States put them in place. France sits an hour ahead every week of the year, both sides changing on the same two Sundays from different base offsets, so that step never moves. Were the United Kingdom to alter its arrangements, the island would face a real decision, with the mainland on one side and a coast an hour ahead on the other.

Which rows hold and which move. London, Madrid and New York keep their gaps in both columns because each switches on a schedule matched to this one - London at no difference, Madrid an hour ahead in a different zone. Freetown, Riyadh and Bishkek hold permanent offsets, so each loses an hour of standing once British Summer Time begins; Sierra Leone's case is the one where a match turns into a gap. Montevideo falls an hour further behind for the same reason, keeping UTC−3 all year.
Business Hours and the Crossing to Saint-Malo
One direction moves. Coordination with the United Kingdom needs no arithmetic, and neither does anything between Jersey and Guernsey. The short crossing south is the exception: sailings to Saint-Malo land on a clock an hour ahead in either season, each end printing its own local time, so the outbound leg reads an hour longer on paper than it is and the return an hour shorter. Sailings thin out outside the summer months, and the fast craft on those routes are more often disrupted by winter weather. Always confirm schedules directly with the operator.
Frequently Asked Questions About Time in Jersey
Is Jersey ever on French time?
Not now. France is an hour ahead in every week of the year, since both sides switch on the same dates from different base offsets.
Does Jersey keep the same time as Guernsey?
Yes, in both seasons. The two Bailiwicks hold identical offsets and switch on the same two Sundays.
Why do some apps show French time on the island?
Because they infer the zone from proximity rather than from the register. The correct identifier is Europe/Jersey, which resolves to the British pair.
Do Jersey timetables use the 24-hour clock?
Mixed. Ferry and airline schedules use 24-hour notation, so an evening sailing reads 20:15, while everyday usage often keeps the 12-hour form.
Is high water the same hour all round the island?
No. The time of high water differs from coast to coast, so a stated tide time only means anything once the place it refers to is named.
Is Jersey time the same as GMT all year?
Only through the winter months. From late March to late October the island reads an hour above it, exactly as the mainland does.
