Seoul was hosting the Olympic Games, American networks were paying for live coverage, and a one-hour advance moved daytime finals into evening viewing on the far side of the Pacific. Without it, several finals would have reached that audience in the small hours.

Reversed as soon as it ended. The measure drew public criticism at the time, with the opposition arguing that a whole population had been rearranged around a broadcast schedule. It was abolished directly after the closing ceremony and has not been revived.

Border Time Differences on a Divided Peninsula

One land frontier, and it matches. The only land boundary runs north, and the clock on the far side reads exactly the same. That has been true since the northern reading was realigned, and it means the most closely watched border anywhere carries no time step at all.
